The Protein Society DEI Vision

Protein science is an integrative and inclusive endeavor that utilizes concepts and methods from a diverse array of disciplines to strive for a more complete understanding of the role that proteins play in biological structure and function across many levels. As a membership-based society and leader in its field, The Protein Society values and is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of its societal endeavors. We, therefore, strive to provide a safe and supportive environment for all of our constituents, where everyone is treated with respect and is encouraged to contribute their unique strengths and abilities to our shared mission. We are committed to acting on these principles for the betterment of the field of protein science and all activities with which The Protein Society is engaged.

A Statement on Racial Injustice

In these times of strife and anguish brought about by the pandemic, we are witnessing the blatant and systemic racism toward Black Americans that has led to inequalities at every level. Black and brown Americans are hardest hit by COVID-19 and will suffer the most in the economic aftermath.

We see the murders of Black Americans including George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor. That list goes on far too long, yet these are only the publicized cases of harm against Black Americans. We must do better. Progress demands that in this time of little national leadership, we as individuals commit to advance justice, equality, peace, and understanding. We, in The Protein Society, voice that Black Lives Matter, and that we are committed to working for the end of the repressive, brutal, and systemic racism that has existed for more than 400 years. In the coming weeks, The Protein Society will outline a plan of action that includes investments in outreach, mentoring, and inclusion initiatives that can help address inequities and contribute to meaningful and sustained change.
